For those with a small attic, a loft conversion offers loads of ways to maximise the space. Not only can you add an extra room to your house, but subtle techniques can make the most out of your loft and make it seem bigger than it actually is.
Dormer Windows
These windows extend out from your roof, adding a little window area and more space. Dormer windows are ideal for the smaller attic as they create the illusion of loads more room, as well as add more light. They are typically used when more head height is needed, as the loft needs to be at least 2m tall to qualify for a conversion. You can look at our previous blog post here, for more information on the dormer window.
Depending on what you intend to use the loft conversion for, you may need some storage fitted. If you account for storage space right from the beginning, you can work around it when it comes to planning for other furniture. Storing upwards, to the ceiling, is a great way to make the most of the height of your loft rather than using valuable floor space. Storage also means less clutter which is a great way to get the minimalist look.
Decoration
There are things you can do yourself to make the loft conversion look and feel bigger. Firstly, paint it with lighter colours such as whites and creams as these reflect light round the room, making it seem larger. Mirrors are also great at creating the illusion of a bigger space, so try placing a large mirror on the longest wall as a focal point. It’s all about generating as much light as possible, for an airy feel.
