If you’re converting your loft into a usable space, it’s worth thinking about the energy efficiency of your attic. By using energy efficient methods with your roof, you can make sure that your loft is as cost-effective as it can be, and try and save money on your energy bills.

Good insulation

With good quality insulation fitted to your roof, you can be sure that your loft conversion will stay warm. There are two different methods for insulating lofts, both of which have their merits, but the ‘warm roof’ method is best for energy efficiency. You can look at our previous blog post to find out what this method involves. Essentially, getting a loft conversion is a good opportunity to make sure your roof is insulated properly and that energy isn’t escaping.

Double glazed windows

The next step to an eco-friendly loft conversion is double glazed windows. Double glazing is so much more energy efficient than single glazing, reducing the amount of energy lost. It works by trapping heat in between the two sheets of glass, to stop heat escaping and or cold air getting in. Low emissivity glass is the best for energy efficiency as it has a layer of metal oxide which is even better at stopping heat from passing through.

Heating

When it comes to heating your loft conversion, you need to be sure that your boiler can withstand the extra pressure to add more radiators. In some cases, it is necessary to get an extra boiler to account for the extra space to be heated. This increases your energy usage, not to mention your energy bill. By installing the best quality insulation, you may not have to get an additional boiler, saving money and energy.
